Somos InControl for Android asks for two permissions, and neither is used for tracking or anything that leaves your home network. They exist so the app can find and talk to your Sonos® speakers and show its Lock Screen controls.

What the Sonos® side needs

As on iPhone, Somos also needs UPnP on in the Sonos® app (Account › Privacy & Security › UPnP), a VPN that allows your home network, the phone on the same Wi-Fi as the speakers, and not a guest or IoT network. See If Somos can’t find your speakers.

Nearby devices (Android 17 or later)

Android 17 added a permission for apps that talk to devices on your home network. Somos explains it on a Connect to your Sonos page, then Android asks. Allow it: without it, Somos can’t find or control your speakers. It only covers devices on the Wi-Fi your phone is connected to. To turn it back on, open Somos InControl’s app permissions in Android Settings and allow Nearby devices, then return to Somos and tap Try Again, or choose Your Sonos → Rescan My Network from the menu.

Notifications (Android 13 or later)

Somos asks whether to allow notifications for its speaker controls on the Lock Screen and in the notification shade. Choose Continue to answer Android’s prompt, or Not now. Finding your speakers works either way. See Lock Screen and Widgets.

What Somos does not ask for

Somos doesn’t request Location or Bluetooth on Android. There is no Bluetooth list of nearby speakers.
